What Feline Owners Need To Know About Cats Eating Grass, Plants And Vegetables

There are several reasons why your cat is eating grass, plants from the garden or your favorite house plants. Consuming grass and plants aids in ridding the feline’s system of hairballs and other build-up in their throats.

A cat that consumes grass that has not been chemically treated and safe-to-eat plants does so in order to cleanse irritating balls of hair as well as crunchy dry food or snacks that may have been caught in the its throat. These items can build up and cause your fur baby excruciating pain and severe digestive problems.

You don’t have much control over what grass or plants your outdoor cat consumes, but you do have control over what greenery your indoor cat eats. If your lawn and garden are not treated with chemicals why not bring in some grass clippings or green leafy vegetables from the garden for your cat to enjoy.

If you’ve ever brought home a bag filled with leafy green vegetables you may have already discovered that your feline has nibbled on celery leaves, beet greens and Swiss chard, kale and perhaps even parsley and mint.

It is safe to offer your cat chopped carrots, peas, broccoli florets, green beans, zucchini, lettuce and spinach. Take care when introducing vegetables into your cat’s diet. Just like humans, cats can experience gastrointestinal distress and diarrhea when consuming too much of a good thing.

Cats are natural meat eaters and a protein-based diet is essential for optimal health. The key to your cat’s enjoyment of vegetables and leafy greens is the word moderation.

There is nothing wrong with offering small amounts of steamed vegetables that have been cut into small pieces or pureed. Serve vegetables as a treat or mix into food, whichever your cat prefers.

Cats cannot resist nibbling on greenery and flowers. It is extremely important to be watchful of the flowers and plants you bring home.

Common houseplants you must completely avoid having in your home include aloe, poinsettias, any type of lily including Calla lily, pig lily, trumpet lily and white arum. The ASPCA has a complete list of vegetables and plants that are toxic for cats.

Helpful, thank you! I don’t have cats, but I know I often search online for what is safe for our chinchilla, hedgehog, and rabbit to eat!
