Signs and Treatments of Common Cat Skin Problems

If you are a cat owner like I am, you probably know by now that cat skin problems are something common among cats. My white Persian, Lily most recently lost a patch of hair on her face and I was surprised to find out she had allergies.

Learning about the signs and treatments of the most common skin problems in cats can help to ensure your cat stays happy and healthy.

Ringworm

Ringworm is probably the most common skin problem among cats. What many people don’t know is that ringworm is not caused by a worm at all, but is caused by parasitic fungal organisms. The most common sign of ringworm in cats are patches of skin that feature hair loss. Treatment of ringworm not only involved the infected cat but their environment as well. Treatment normally includes antifungal creams.

Fleas

Fleas are another common skin problem among cats. Fleas multiply fast, so it is important to begin treating your cat as soon as your notice there is a problem. The most obvious sign that your cat has fleas is you will notice them scratching and biting, especially around the neck area and ears. When it comes to treatments, there are several options available. Flea collars, flea shampoos, flea powders and flea combs are just some of the options available.

Allergies

Just like humans, cats can be allergic to any number of things including certain foods, grass, pollen, and chemicals. Signs of allergies in your cat include sneezing, itchy skin, watery eyes, vomiting and/or diarrhea. The best treatment for cat allergies is prevention, meaning removing the allergens from their environment.

Dry skin

Like humans are susceptible to dry skin, so are cats. Signs of dry skin in cats include flaking that resembles dandruff, lackluster fur and excessive scratching. Nutritional deficiencies are the most common cause of dry skin among cats. If cats do not get an adequate amount of vitamins, minerals and proteins in their diet, dry skin will ensue. Another cause of dry skin in cats is excess bathing. Bathing your cat too often can strip away their natural oils, resulting in dry skin.
