5 Things To Be Aware Of As Your Cat Ages
It’s never nice to see your cat starting to get older but it happens to the best of them. After all, no animal lives forever. The best you can do is make sure that you take the very best care of your kitty possible. That means making sure that you know what you’re looking for as they get older. Here are some of the things that you need to know.
Your cat might start to get slower
One of the major signs that you’re certain to notice is your cat getting slower and slower. Their responses will be a little less fast and they will generally move around at a slower pace. It’s just that simple. What you need to do is make sure that you look after them during this time. When they get tired, leave them to rest.
You need to watch out for kidney disease
Kidney disease is one of the worst things that can happen to cats, and so you need to watch out for it at all times. Some of the signs include fatigue, sickness, and lack of appetite. You should make sure that you take your cat to the vets if you notice any of these issues.

Weight gain is a real problem
Much like us humans, cats tend to have a slower metabolism the more they age. What that means is that they will gain weight at a faster pace. As you likely know, this can lead to a whole range of problems, and so you need to keep your eye on it. You may need to change your cat’s diet as they age.
Trips to the vet will be a must
You should be aware that you will need to take your cat to the vets more and more as they age. This is unavoidable. In truth, you will end up spending a lot on healthcare for your cat at this point, and so it’s well worth budgeting for that. That way, unexpected fees won’t knock your socks off every time they come up

Cats age faster than you think
One of the things that people fail to understand is the fact that cats age much faster than they think. After the ten year mark, they will start to change dramatically. You shouldn’t be surprised when this happens. Ensure that your kitty still exercises and eats well. That way, you can be sure that they are content and comfortable.

We actually just took in my sister’s cat earlier this week. She’s 14, so she definitely falls into the older cat category. Thanks for the info.

What an educational resource for cat owners. So glad that you shared this for owners of cats who are aging, our pets matter too!
We have three fairly young cats. I’m definitely going to have to keep an eye on these things over the years!
This is great information. I don’t have any cats, but I will share this with friends and family.
I had cats my entire childhood. And even when they got older, they were the sweetest loving pets.
My first cat died at 12 so this article makes a lot of sense. My current cat is 9 so I need to keep an eye out
Great tips for cat owners! My cats are currently 9 and 1. My older one is not showing any signs of slowing down yet, but I know she will eventually.

I think the weight gain issue is the same for dogs (and truth be told, for humans!). Have to keep them active to keep off the pounds!

My cat is on the older side. She’s 16 this year! I’ve definitely noticed a lot of changes in her over the last year or two :-/
